NS transfer job GE44 steps beneath the condemned Nelson Street overpass which stood guard over the southern entrance to Atlanta Terminal Station which was leveled in 1971. This 1906 built structure is set to be demolished in the coming weeks as soon as the railroad is content with their timeline. This week was to be the last in the original schedule for Nelson Street Bridge to be a physical structure although those engineering plans have been pushed back. The destruction of the remaining section is all part of the massive Atlanta Gulch Project which is already in motion. One historic item that first comes to mind in this scene is President Franklin D. Roosevelt who died in Warm Springs, Georgia on April 12, 1945, the next morning the President's funeral train arrived under the watchful eyes of a full Honor Guard and thousands of mourning spectators, 74 years later it's just another day in this early morning view.
