The CB&Q had 2 old branchlines that broke off here at Chariton. Completed prior to 1900, one branch headed north towards Indianola with connections into Des Moines, and the other one ran southwest towards Leon with connections to St. Joe. Chariton is located at MP 334 on the Ottumwa Sub and is 26 miles east of Osceola.
