Remarks & Notes
Train crews and passengers of the California Zephyr that run on the Moffat Line must be curious when they see the horse in the red hazmat outfit. “Cold War Horse” was created to acknowledge the history of Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant, which used to sit on the property adjacent to the Moffat Line in Arvada, Colorado. The plant operated from 1952 to 1992 and manufactured the plutonium triggers for 70,000 nukes. Over the years Rocky Flats experienced many routine and accidental releases into the air soil and water, many of which eventually became public. The art piece is a visible symbol of the danger that Rocky Flats workers faced in the decades before the plant's closure, and the suspicion around whether the environmental cleanup of the superfund site has eliminated all of the plutonium laced dirt.
