This loaded Union Pacific coal train has just left the Skyline loadout and is now entering the tiny town of Scofield, Utah; elevation 7739’ and population 23. The train will skirt Scofield Reservoir and then drop down into the canyon of the headwaters of the Price River, which it will follow to a junction with the UP Provo Sub at Colton. All of this mountain railroading is taking place on the Wasatch Plateau, which lies immediately east of the Wasatch Range proper. It is dark and totally cloud covered at Scofield, but just 3 or 4 miles south at the Skyline loadout it is snowing. It will be snowing at Scofield before this train clears town.
