Remarks & Notes
Norfolk Southern mine run U44 heads east out of the yard at Norton, Virginia with two cabooses on the end of the train. The empty coal train will make a reverse movement onto the Big Toms Creek Branch at Coeburn, Virginia to be flood loaded. Although it is typical of an empty coal train out of Norton to have a caboose as a shoving platform for reverse movements on the Big Toms Creek Branch, it is unknown to the photographer as to why two cabooses were used on this day.

Long after their mainline days, several cabooses soldier on at the end of locals and work trains.
