Remarks & Notes
Pig Train South. Led by a trio of foreign power, NS 238 passes through Branchville, SC. This depot was built in 1877, and President Taft spoke here in 1909. The Charleston-Hamburg line (on which the Best Friend of Charleston ran) reached here in 1832 and extended to Hamburg in 1833. NS 238 is on the branch line that was extended from here to Orangeburg in 1840, which makes this location the oldest rail junction in the United States. The Southern (actually a repainted Nickel Plate) Caboose in the background rests on what was the Charleston-Hamburg line.
