A 40 year old vet leads empty autorack train Q210 out of the North portal of the Cumberland Mountain Tunnel at Cowan, TN on the edge of the Cumberland Plateau. The 2200FT. Tunnel was constructed in 1853 by the NC&StL railroad, some 100 Irishman were killed during the construction of the tunnel. During the Civil War years many battles were fought here due to its strategic location between Chattanooga and Nashville and there were also many attempts to blow the tunnel up but lack of explosives made it impossible.
