"Brake Test Under the Maspeth Industrial Center"
New York & Atlantic Railway's RS-90 pauses under the Maspeth Industrial Center on the Bushwick Branch while the Assistant Conductor walks the brake test. Todays train consists of 30 empties for Waste Management which, with the 3 engines on the point, stretches from Fresh Pond Road to Flushing Ave (roughly a half of a mile). Once the assistant conductor has finished walking the train, they will proceed the short distance west towards the Varick Waste Management Transfer Station.
The Mother/Slug locomotive pair (USWX 400 & USWX 010) was purchased by Waste Management and built by Knoxville Locomotive Works (KLW) for use by New York & Atlantic Railway's Yard jobs which have the primary task of serving two of Waste Management's transload locations in New York City. The "mother" unit, USWX 400 is a KLW SE23B-M (NZE23B) Tier 4 locomotive and the "slug", USWX 010, is a SE23B-S. The SE23B-M (NZE23B) is a member of KLW's "Near Zero Emission Single Engine Locomotive" Series offering low emissions, low fuel consumption, and superior tractive effort performance.
