A hot Santa Fe 891 train heads east in July 1986. This piggyback train is crossing the Santa Ana River at the east end of Santa Ana Canyon, and in the process has also just crossed from Orange County to Riverside County. Santa Fe C30-7 8106 is leading another C30-7, an FP45, and SD40-2 and an SDP40F - pf course, the dirtiest lcomotive would be on the point! As usual in mid-summer, the hills are primarily brown (or "gold," because it is the Golden State, after all), but the Green River Gold Course is living up to its name with green trees and green ... greens. Even in a drought year, god forbid that golf courses aren't taking more than their fair share of precious water in the west. (1986 was the beginning of one of the longest droughts in southern California, which got worse in 1988 and didn't let up until 1992.)
