Converse Junction sits near the bottom of Logan Hill, in Wyoming's Powder River Basin. The tracks on the left of the photo reach into the Belle Ayer Mine. Belle Ayr opened in 1972 and is the oldest mine in the "Southern" Powder River mining area. On July 1st Blackjewel, the current owner, filled bankruptcy and sent its workers home. The future of the mine is uncertain. The BNSF train in the photo is climbing Logan Hill with a load from one of the Powder River's other numerous mines... |
