The sun is very low on the horizon as Amtrak train 785 arrives in Irvine, California, 1½ hours behind schedule. This Pacific Surfliner is a little longer than normal due to it being Racing Season at the Del Mar racetrack, just north of San Diego. Billed as "where the turf meets the surf," this horse racing track is adjacent to the beach, with just the railroad and Coast Highway between them. The Irvine station was very busy this August 3, 2019, evening, but not with passengers - the station's parking garage was full of cars from people parking there for the Third Eye Blind concert on the other side of the tracks (with Jimmy Eat World as the opening act). I am sure that you are as surprised as I was that Third Eye Blind is still touring (and headlining)! I thought they lost a whole year, but they must have a semi-charmed life. I guess that just how it's going to be. And the bill had another opening act, which was already playing as this train arrived, leaving Jimmy Eat World in the middle. (And now I've run out of song titles to sneak in here...)
