There is no easy route through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Trains coming to and from Northern California must contend with some of the most hostile and scenic trackage anywhere in the country.
Here, BNSF 6105 drags a lengthy eastbound manifest up the Feather River Canyon at Pulga. The sheer walls of loose rock have challenged railroad maintainers for over a century. The numerous additions of slide fencing, concrete walls and fills is just a testament to the intrepid nature of railroad work in America. |
