NS9987 leading an empty coal passes recently restored train depot in Tazewell, VA as a family looks on and waves to the crew. The depot was deeded to the town of Tazewell and through grant money and donations it was fully restored. Tours of the depot are free of charge and inside you will find many dated pictures and historical facts about the depot and its history. For those who like to model railroads you will even find a 4x8 (approx) HO scale layout to view while waiting on the next passing freight train. Which was exactly what I was doing when I heard the whistle of the oncoming coal train pictured in this shot. My wife's grandfather, as a child, would often board the passenger trains that once stopped here back in the late 1930's early 40's. He would often ride the train south to Richlands, VA or board a train for the long over night trip to the naval ship yard in Norfolk, VA where his father worked & lived. We met my wife's grandfather here at the depot to let him see the restored depot and reminiscence of the days gone by. He was inside the depot doing just that at the time this train passed. So collecting this picture of a train passing by during that visit makes this picture even more of a special memory. The depot had its grand opening May 18,2019 and you can visit their Facebook page for more information, https://www.facebook.com/tazewelltrainstation/
