Sitting in Aberdeen, North Carolina, is a quartet of Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway GP40-2L locomotives. Built for the Canadian National by General Motors Diesel (of London, Ontario), these were some of the first locomotives built with "safety cabs." As they aged, CN has been selling off many of their GP40-2L and GP40-2(W) diesels to shortlines all around Canada and the United States. ACWR 9556 was purchased from leaser Taylor Brothers Rail (TBRX 9556), and was originally CN 9556. The other three engines are ACWR 9582, ACWR 9624 and ACWR 9593, which all had the same numbers on the CN. (Aberdeen, North Carolina - October 18, 2008)
