Utah Ry. #5004 leads 4 other 6 axle units up the 2.4% grade in Price River Canyon headed towards Soldier Summit. The train is just exiting the oft photographed horseshoe curve below Kyune. Thanks to a handy, but narrow, highway turn out, many photos have been taken here. This train loaded at the Savage loadout between Price and Wellington, Utah and is headed to the IPP Power Plant near Delta, Utah. Seeing a traditional solid grey and red Utah Ry. consist this long after Genesee & Wyoming took over the railroad was a pretty rare treat. Not too long after this photo Utah Ry. ceased using its own power on the head end of these coal trains in favor of using Union Pacific power. Utah Ry. power continued being used for the manned helpers. The last Utah Ry coal train out of eastern Utah ran on January 16, 2017.
Coal and steel don't go bad. This album features long, slow, heavy freight trains; drag freights, slop freights, dead freights, etc. Trains with lots of power, and lots of different cargo slogging along behind.
