In order to get from the Union Pacific's North Yard in downtown Denver to the Greeley Sub main line on which UP 4014 and cars would run to Cheyenne, the train had to back up just over 5 miles. Here we see it pushing back on the old Denver & Rio Grande Western Belt Line, which crosses over the South Platte River. As it was backing up, two poor guys had to ride on the ladders of the last car (which was a sand hopper), facing the brunt of the blizzard and acting as lookouts due to the poor visibility from the storm.
