Remarks & Notes
A trio of GE workhorses accelerate out of Tunnel 18 at Newcastle, California. Tunnel 18 is one of the only double tracked tunnels along the Donner Pass Route (the other being the Blue Canyon Tunnel). It is also one of the few places where both main tracks lie side by side in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. UP 5981 is seen dragging an empty coal train up the newer #2 main track. To the left, you can see the older and steeper #1 main track.
