Duluth Missabe and Iron Range C630 902 resting at N. Fond Du Lac WI April 1976. The 902 is on it's way to Cartier Mining Railway in Quebec and is being forwarded by the Soo Line to presumably Chicago for movement east. The 902 was built as Union Pacific 2902 in May 1966 and retired by the UP in November 1973. At the time the UP disposed of these big Alcos, The Missabe was experiencing a power shortage due to their orders at EMD being backordered. The Missabe picked up these Alco brutes and used them on jobs close to Proctor due to reliability issues. These units never wore Missabe paint and were renumbered by simply dropping the 2 from the UP number. These were not the first Alco units operated by the Missabe as they had a fleet of RSD15 units built in 1959 but they were sent to sister US Steel road Bessemer and Lake Erie in the early 60s.
