A unique part of the coal train shuffle in Montana is the wye at Moran Junction. Trains coming off the top line, Forsyth Subdivision (ex NP) normally continue straight onto the MRL. Likewise down below, trains coming off of the Bighorn Subdivision (ex CB&Q) normally continue onto the MRL as well. However, some coal trains divert and wind themselves through a farmers field in the middle of nowhere as they head, almost literally, back the way they came. Most coal trains from Superior, WI and Becker, MN come this way, as well as a host of others from the midwest. Its a neat operation to witness, with the train strung out on both subdivisions at once! This empty came off of the Forsyth Sub and is now heading back down the Big Horn for another load of coal.
