Remarks & Notes |
Before the Fall!
Less than two weeks after this shot was taken - on February 12th - a portion of the west end of the 150 year old bore would collapse severing Pan Am Southern's east-west mainline that sees 6 to 8 trains daily. This closure has resulted in convoluted detour moves via the B&A for some trains and deep into Vermont for others, creating unique photo opportunities that have brought camera toting fans flooding trackside from near and far.
But here it was just another boring day and I had this train to myself as North Adams local crew AD-1 is in charge of Pan Am Southern manifest 16R (Binghamton to East Deerfield) as they emerge from the darkness after traveling 4.75 miles and 1000 ft beneath Hoosac Mountain deep in the heart of the Berkshire Range on the legendary Boston & Maine Railroad mainline.
Note the little cistern and pipe draining water along the cliff face at left. |
