Cedar Rapids & Iowa City locomotive No. 202, mated to slug No. 302, works the railroad’s yard in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on April 11, 2016. These machines are custom-built by Relco in Albia, Iowa specifically for Crandic. Slug mother locomotive No. 202 is designated a L4-1500XD-M (L=locomotive, 4=four axles, 1500=1,500 h.p., XD=extreme duty, M=mother), while slug No. 302 is designated a S4-143 (S=slug, 4=four axles, 143=ballasted weight in tons). Both are decked out in an interesting combination of deep gold very similar to Rio Grande’s Aspen gold, with Soo Line-like red ends, over a light gray underframe.
