Opened in 1962, the Cholla Power plant is one of the last remaining coal fired power plants in Arizona. Jointly owned by Arizona Public Service and PacifiCorp, the power plant consists of four units with a nameplate capacity of 1.02 gigawatts (1,021 megawatts). Due to environmental and cost concerns, unit #2 was retired in 2016. Unit #4 is scheduled for retirement in 2020 with units #1 and #3 set for retirement in 2025. Cholla is a yet another example of America's shift away from coal in exchange for cheaper and cleaner energy. In this shot, the Cholla Power Plant is hard at work creating energy as the BNSF 4516 accelerates east along the Gallup Subdivision near Joseph City, Arizona.
