Sunrise on the Sunset Limited. The tri-weekly Amtrak Sunset Limited (Train 1, P42DCs 45 and 28) has just begun its journey of 1,995 miles from New Orleans, Louisiana to Los Angeles, California on the morning of Saturday, October 5, 2019. Seen here crossing the Huey P. Long Bridge, it will reach a height of 135 feet above the Mississippi River. In San Antonio, Texas, it will join with the Texas Eagle for the rest of its trip. Opened in 1935 as a rail and road bridge as part of an arrangement with various agencies and companies, it is owned and maintained by the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad and presently carries six lanes of U.S. Route 90. The "Sunset Limited" name was assigned to a train that roughly follows this route by the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1894, and is the oldest named train in the Unites States.
