Remarks & Notes
In 1954 Southern Railway donated J-Class 2-8-0 #542 to Tanglewood Park near Clemmons NC. There it sat deteriorating for 37 years. In 1991 a deal was struck between the North Carolina Transportation Museum and the Forsyth County Commissioners/Tanglewood Park, to move the engine out of the park to the museum. This move was funded by a donation from the Winston-Salem Chapter NRHS. In exchange for 542, the museum sent ex-Illinois Central, 0-8-0 #1894 to become the new park engine. In this photo we see 542 has been moved from the park to a siding in Clemmons along Idols Road, the former site of the Clemmons Depot. US Navy #65-00556, a 44-ton switcher built by the Davenport Locomotive Works in 1953, has come up from the museum to tow the 542 back. 542 has since had an excellent cosmetic restoration and is currently on display at the museum in Spencer. see photo ID 729582
