The Storybook Railroad. Don Ball Jr. once called the NJ & NY “a storybook railroad”, and the station at Hillsdale, NJ was the kind of place he had in mind. In the early days, the it was the company headquarters of the NJ & NY RR, operator of the Pascack Valley Line until it was leased by the Erie Railroad in 1896. By the time the Erie and Lackawanna Railroads merged in 1960, the station and the line itself had been dramatically diminished in significance, but governmental support for commuter rail has caused it to have its highest ever ridership numbers in recent years. NJ TRANSIT Train 9625 arrives in soft evening light on Monday, June 8, 2020 with Erie Lackawanna tribute unit ALP-45DP 4519 in the lead, celebrating the notable heritage of the area on its nominal home rails.
