Remarks & Notes |
The UP local out of Marshalltown rolls over the Iowa Interstate's Newton Sub at Grinnell. This beautiful restored depot is on the national register of historic places. The Rock Island built 1st into Grinnell and built a depot at this location in 1863. The Central Railroad of Iowa built north-south thru here in 1872. The M&St.L eventually acquired the Central Railroad, and the old depot became too small. The Rock Island built this current one in 1893 by local contractor in the area. It was destined so operator could see in both directions at this junction. The building now houses The Peppertree-Depot Crossing restaurant.
I couldn't figure out what angle to shoot, so I let the boys go where they wanted long before I decided. Well it ended up working well with them and the engineer exchanging waves. |
