Deep Snow Deep in the Tunnel District
Amtrak number 5 is rolling through the tangents and tunnels deep in the tunnel district. Immediately in the distance Eldorado Canyon displays its meteorological phenomenon common after heavy snowfall. The rolling cloud banks coming up from Boulder Valley is a frozen fog of evaporated snow. Even with temperatures in the low teens in this image by noon the sun will have removed 90% of the snow from the trees, something that must be seen to be believed. Just the same these moments are rare and extremely short lived. Between the time window of the weather a matter of 2-3 hours and having a train turn up it’s an improbable scenario not often duplicated. Here, deep in the tunnel district Amtrak number 5 is hugging the valley east of Crescent and past Tunnel 12 in the 2.85+ grade. The only thing I hear is number 5 in and out of the tunnels since coming around through South Draw the GE’s grinding away echoed in the canyon silenced by the heavy pillows of snow.
