After acquiring its Northern Division, the Susquehanna instituted haulage trains to move freight over trackage rights on the former Erie main line between its two divisions. To get the trains over the road, five ex-Conrail C430’s were purchased and quickly placed in service. Here four of the C430’s and one C420 lead a westbound haulage train, which is rolling to an unscheduled stop at Hale Eddy, New York. I don’t recall whether the problem was train- or locomotive-related, but this train made repeated stops, frustrating photographers who were hoping to get it on Gulf Summit grade and Starucca Viaduct in daylight.
