Remarks & Notes |
The sound of a 20-cylinder SD45 once again echo off the Jefferson River Canyon walls east of Whitehall Montana. Montana Rail Link SD45 346 has a loaded ballast train well in hand as the train makes its way down MRL's 5th subdivision. The 5th sub was once the Northern Pacific's route over Homestake Pass. It is now stub ended not far past the ballast loader in Pipestone Montana, where this train came from. The 346 was built in February of 1970 as Norfolk and Western as 1779. The 346 was at the time of the photo one of only two active SD45's on the Montana Rail Link roster.
On the other side of the river was where the Milwaukee Road Pacific Coast Extension once ran. Now the vast majority of that route has either been ripped up and turned into a bike trail, or nature has started to reclaim it with just remnants of once was remaining, as evident by the code poles. |
