A pair of TTX heavy duty flatcars carry two 3-foot narrow gauge locomotives built new for the White Pass & Yukon by National Railway Equipment Company (NRE) of Mount Vernon, Illinois. A total of ten locomotives are being built, with six being delivered this year. These 3,300 horsepower locomotives are 65 feet long and weigh in at 135 tons, and will be used on the railroad’s popular passenger trains. As the locomotives are finished, they are shipped to Seattle via flatcar, then to Skagway, Alaska, on a barge. In this view, fully-wrapped WP&Y Nos. 3003 and 3004 are on a westbound BNSF freight train climbing Montana’s Mullan Pass west of Helena, negotiating the upper loop at Austin on the afternoon of July 1, 2020. These locomotives would be unveiled at Skaqway on July 13, 2020, showing off a new paint scheme of black with a red stripe.
