At the time of this photo, NS 18G's schedule often would have it make its eastern trek through New Jersey in the early morning light. Because of the timing, this train would be a top candidate to be put "in the hole" somewhere along the way on the Norfolk Southern Lehigh Line to allow for other trains to keep moving. In this photo, while not exactly in the hole, it is being held back near Milepost 37 on Track #1 to allow for traffic ahead at Port Reading Junction to clear up. Because if its length, the train needs to be held back here because it would block the 13th Avenue Railroad Crossing if it were to proceed up to the home signals at Port Reading Junction. At the time of this publication, NS 18G's schedule has been moved up a few hours to reduce the waiting delays for this train. As a result, it is almost never seen in daylight anymore. The second unit is NS 2614 (flared SD70M) which was retired and sold in February of 2020.
