An unlikely combination....just because we could. Although there were some M-Class survivors still serving the Norfolk & Western when the J-Class locomotives were operating, I'm not aware of any photos existing to prove that any combination of the two ever served on an actual freight. That said, during the 2019 "N&W Re-union of Steam" at Pennsylvania's Strasburg Rail Road, we had two genuine N&W survivors together for the first time and a little bit of time to kill at the end of a mostly gloomy day. Even though the rain was pelting down heavily at times, Charter Lead Pete Lerro suspected that many of the 80 or so photographers gathered for the event might like to see what 125,000 lbs. of tractive effort could do with a consist of 10 ancient, and mostly empty freight cars. The result was this spirited charge by 382 and 611, up one of the steeper grades on the Strasburg Rail Road, through the grounds of Cherry Crest Farm.
