On the First Day of Fall, Aspens in Gold
Below me from the steep incline just below CO highway 72 a westbound crawls around the horseshoe at day lighted tunnel 28. In search of color this year it has been very slim on the eastern slope. Between very little rain over the last several months and a September early winter storm a few weeks ago which triggered all our aspen and other foliage to make the change. In a matter of week or so, some areas not at all; just straight to the orange brown and not the gradual full yellow I like that would normally last 12-18 days. Most of the aspen in the usual places are already bare as they switch and proceed to drop their leaves in days. I did manage to find some color in the protective valleys. In these locations the temps were probably a bit more stable a few weeks ago during the snow storm. Last year at this time it was a bumper crop.
In this frame BNSF #5293 in sad shape leads the daily westbound manifest from Denver to Provo. Crawling into the horseshoe at Cliffe it’s a high green through the Moffat Tunnel and western slope and on to Provo. |
