The fire fighting and rescue train "LRZ 14" (Lösch- und Rettungszug LRZ 14) of Biasca is returning from a training run to Rivera-Bironico and back, between Castione-Arbedo and Claro. The first unit, consisting of a tools vehicle and a tank car unit, is used for firefighting and rescue operations. The second unit, consisting of two rescue vehicles, takes over the shuttle transport of people to a safe location. For the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT), two of these LRZ 14s are kept on standby, one at the new Erstfeld Maintenance and Intervention Center (EIZ) and another at the Biasca EIZ. For each train, a crew of 5 men is kept available around the clock (7x24 h). The crews of the firefighting and rescue platoons are barracked at their locations. This enables them to be ready for action within a few minutes, even at night. The platoons are ready to go within 5 minutes. In the event of an incident, they are then reinforced by external forces, such as fire department, ambulance, etc..
