On a pleasant September morning, I made the trek up to Aiken Switch to shoot the UP 1943, the "Spirit of the Union Pacific" leading the MNPKS towards Topeka and Kansas City. This is shot from Aiken Switch Rd. near Onaga, and we're near MP 102 on UP's Kansas Sub. In addition to the 24,000 ft. siding, this is where the spur to Evergy's Jeffrey Energy Center splits off to the south. Here, it would wait to meet a westbound before proceeding to the east.
Of note, I thought it was interesting to hear the UP Dispatcher call them up at one point, asking for "UP 1943, the Spirit of the Union Pacific." I thought that was neat, to know that the DS knew what they were dealing with.
