Along the former four-track mainline, relegated to two main tracks since the mid-eighties, an eastbound coal train glides down the river grade. The Pennsylvania Railroad's J. Edgar Thompson built a low grade route following the Juniata River that afforded a high speed railroad until it reached the wall of the Alleghenies at Altoona.
