Remarks & Notes |
The Pilatus cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad to the Pilatus is by far the steepest rack railroad in the world. It is the only one to use the Locher system, in which two cogwheels engage laterally with a rack, and horizontal rollers also engage under the rack to prevent the vehicle from climbing. Railcars Bhe 1/2 # 28 and # 30 (in the golden Bucherer publicity paint scheme) are running up through the Eselwand (donkey-wall) in a grade of 48.0 %. On this railway, the railcars are often running on sight distance. |
