Remarks & Notes |
The diesel locomotive ST44 474 is resting at the Gniezno shed. When the first prototype of the M62 heavy diesel freight locomotive was completed in Lugansk in 1964, no-one probably could predict that this was the birth of one of the most widely used and popular diesels in the Eastern bloc countries. In most of the East European countries that purchased the M62's they were the largest and most powerful diesel locomotives in service and quickly became the favorites of the rail fans. This is reflected by the commonly used nicknames given to these locomotives: ‘Gagarin’ (in Poland), ‘Sergei’ (in Czechoslovakia and Hungary) or ‘Taigatrommel’ (in Germany) due to characteristic noise produced by the slow-rotating two-stroke diesel engine). |
