Ordered in 1990 from Morrison-Knudsen and rebuilt from secondhand (thirdhand?) GP40 hulls purchased by M-K, thirty-nine GP40Rs were added to Southern Pacific’s roster as SP 7100-7138. The first seven of these engines were delivered with SP Roman lettering, as seen on SP 7104. (SP 7107 through 7111 were delivered with a small version of the then-new Speed Lettering, and 7112-7138 wore the larger Speed Lettering found on most of SP’s new and repainted engines from this era.
