During the summer of 2021, both UP's Feather River Canyon and Cascade Routes, as well as BNSF's Gateway Subdivision, were affected by wildfires. As a result, BNSF's trains that carry shipments between the Pacific Northwest and California had to be rerouted from Barstow, CA east to Amarillo, TX, then north towards Denver, CO and Alliance, NE. From there, they'd head northwest towards Wyoming, Montana, and finally reaching the PNW. On a late August morning, a Barstow, CA to Pasco, WA manifest train sees some rare mileage as it emerges out of the sag at Darling. On this train, Ferromex and Canadian Pacific motors found themselves trailing on this rare reroute.
