Remarks & Notes
2-6-4 fourcylinder compound express train steamlocomotive 310 # 23 in the Heizhaus Strasshof railway museum near Vienna, on the occasion of the "steam day". Between 1911 and 1916, the kkStB (kaiserlich-königliche Staatsbahnen) procured a total of 90 locomotives for express service on the Northern Railway, the Franz-Josefs Railway and the Western Railway. Despite the imposing driving wheel diameter of 2,140 meters (78,74 inches), the locomotives were only approved for 100 km/h. The design had to take into account that both the axle loads and the overall length were limited within narrow limits by track and turntable conditions. Karl Gölsdorf had already addressed this with the 210 series and now modified it so that it was powered by a superheated steam four-cylinder compound engine. Because of the sluggish controls, however, the locomotives designated as the Series 310 remained flatland engines, but there they produced up to 1800 hp. The locomotives were supplied by the Floridsdorf locomotive factory, the Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik, the Bohemian-Moravian machine factory, the StEG locomotive factory and the Bohemian company Breitfeld & Dan?k. The locomotive 16.08, which was taken out of service in 1956, was initially set up as a museum locomotive in front of the Vienna Technical Museum, but was then restored and made operational again in 1985-1987 for the 150th anniversary of the Austrian (mechanically powered) railroads. It is used for nostalgia trips under the old number of kkStB 310.23 and is stationed at the Strasshof Railway Museum. The boiler was rebuilt in 1999 under the partial sponsorship of the model railway company Roco, which released a special H0 model of the 310.23 for the occasion. The old boiler can be seen on the grounds of the Strasshof Railroad Museum.
