Remarks & Notes |
The Northshore Mining Railroad runs 47 miles from the open pit mine at Babbitt, Minnesota to the huge mill and plant facility on the shore of Lake Superior at Silver Bay. Raw ore is hauled down the railroad and dumped at the mill for processing into Taconite pellets. They also operate a large tailings disposal site in the hills above Silver Bay. Mill tailings are transported by rail about 8 or 10 miles from the lakeside mill to this dump site several times a day. This view shows an empty tailings train alongside Airport Road shortly after leaving the dump site, heading back to the Silver Bay plant. These tailing trains run with a locomotive at each end, as there are no turning facilities at the dump site. |
