On a muggy Louisiana evening, a UP manifest rolls south through the sugar cane fields of White Castle, LA. To the right is Cora Texas which is the second largest sugar factory
in Louisiana producing around 4,000,000 pounds of raw sugar daily. Cora Texas opened its doors in 1817 and at one point had five miles of 36-inch railroad complete with 2
12-ton porter locomotives and 145 pieces of rollingstock to haul in sugar cane (with the completion of Louisiana 1 in 1948 the plant ended its railroad operation). Cora Texas Plantation Company #1 survives at the Forney Transportation Museum in Denver, CO.
