Remarks & Notes
Winter dusk in Glenwood Canyon - the culmination of many different strokes of fortune resulted in this photo opportunity that will not be easily duplicated. First, this spot is only viewable from the elevated interstate highway (I-70) with about 1 foot of shoulder. Generally not a place to get out and take night photos with a tripod. But when you've been stuck for 2hrs behind a multi-vehicle accident, might as well make the most of your time. Second, a train crawling along so slowly than a long exposure will work. Catching a train here at all is no small task these days, and this UP manifest had been in Allen siding for a meet and was ready to head west about 90 minutes prior, but the frigid temps (~6 degrees F) and recent snow had frozen the west switch such that not even the conductor and MOW crews could throw it by hand. So they had to reverse out the siding at restricted speed, at just the right moment of dusk, to get this dramatic light. I about froze my fingers off, and the highway bridge was just a bit shaky, but if you're going to be stuck on the highway for a while - this is just about as heavenly a spot as you'll find.

The reason railpictures.net has captured my imagination for so many years. Images of quality and distinction, in other words, amazing railroad photography.

Good Light, Good Scenery, and a Train

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.

A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
