A chartered passenger train dubbed the “Bill Gates Special” utilizing Wisconsin & Southern, BNSF and privately-owned equipment, pops out of the Moffat Tunnel on Union Pacific’s former Rio Grande main line at East Portal, Colorado, on October 2, 1998. During the long outing to the west coast, the other WSOR E unit that accompanied E9A No. 10C had mechanical issues and was set out, replaced by Burlington Northern Santa Fe GE C44-9W No. 1039. All in all, a unique locomotive combination and passenger move over the Moffat line.
