Remarks & Notes |
The Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey circus train has worked its way down the west side of the Soldier Summit grade and is now on the lower of the two big loops at Gilluly. Grade here is 2%. This allignment was built in 1913 by the Denver & Rio Grande RR. to bypass the original narrow gauge alignment, which was on a difficult 4% gradient. The steep original grade was built by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Ry. in 1883 and converted to standard gauge in 1890 by the Rio Grande Western Ry. |
