1+1=1 What is becoming more of a normal sight along BNSF's Southern Transcon, a combo stack train descends into Crozier Canyon with five middle distributed power (DP) locomotives. Running under the symbol of S-LPCOIG1, the first portion of the train will go to Oakland, CA. The rear portion of the train will split off at Barstow, CA and continue down Cajon Pass to San Bernardino, CA as the Q-CHISBD2. At 15,488 total feet, these trains reduce the number of crews needed; thus lowering the operating ratio. In railroading, an operating ratio of 80 or lower is considered desirable. BNSF's 2021 3rd quarter operating ratio was 59.5%.
