It’s the end of an era for the majority of street running for South Shore Line commuter trains in Michigan City. After over a decade of street running, beginning February 28, 2022, construction will begin, as the road will be converted to one way, and the mainline off to the side. Buses will replace commuter trains between Carroll Avenue (Michigan City) and Porter as part of the project to double-track the CSS mainline between Gary and Michigan City. Railfan’s line 10th and 11th Street’s in Downtown Michigan City as NICTD 41 cruises west around the S-Curve on 11th St heading for Chicago. Rumor has it there was over 100 railfans, including myself lined up and down the street to get their final photos of this unique street running operation before it’s gone forever.
