The End Of An Era. For the final time on Sunday, February 27, 2022, a Northern Indiana Commuter District (NICTD) revenue passenger train rain down the middle of 11th Street in Michigan City, Indiana. A long planned work project has subsequently commenced which will separate 2 tracks from what will become a one way street. Buses will carry passengers between adjoining stations, but freight will continue to operate on a modified basis. On February 18, 2020, NICTD Train 7 stops at the former 11th Street Station with NICD 103 (Nippon Sharyo, 2001) leading. Service began here in 1908 under the banner of the Chicago, Lake Shore and South Bend Railway (CLS&SB), but the operation is more well known for the era of the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad (1925-1967), whose orange cars would live on the line into the NICTD era in the1980s. While it is hard to object to progress that expedites the commute of passengers and freight, it is still a sad day when the line that William Middleton titled "The Last Interurban" has lost its signature characteristic.
