By July 1973, Amtrak was repainting passenger units acquired from the member railroads. Here we have an A-B-A set of recently painted E9s acquired from Milwaukee Road. Amtrak used the BN Harrison St. facilities for servicing needs in the early years, and these units would most likely be assigned to the North Coast Hiawatha to Chicago. Like BN, F units would have been more prevalent west of Minneapolis, especially beyond Havre or Livingston, MT.
